About Inland shipping

  • Inland shipping

The inland shipping industry is an international sector of industry. The Dutch inland waterways are traversed by inland vessels that come from many different countries, and the Dutch inland fleet is one of the largest in Europe. These inland vessels are used to transport passengers and a wide range of goods. Various types of ship are used for these purposes.

The Dutch Safety Board is authorised to carry out investigations into incidents on the Dutch inland waterways that involve inland vessels. The Board not only investigates individual incidents but also performs special investigations. These special investigations examine and analyse multiple incidents that are connected in some way. These investigations examine one or more common safety issues that played a role in these related accidents.

The investigation is performed by the Board’s own in-house investigators, who will be assisted by external specialists where necessary.
