On 21 August 2017 at around 21.30 hours, a fire broke out at the ExxonMobil Refinery in Rotterdam. The fire happened in furnace F1001 of the Powerformer plant. The fire was preceded by a large disruption, which led to tripping of all six furnaces in the Powerformer. When one of the furnaces, F1001, was restarted, there was no flow of product. This led to the overheating of the furnace coil and eventually tearing of the coil (a so called split tube). Flammable product then flowed into the furnace and ignited.
