On the 21st of August 2016, the wooden mast of the historic sailing ship Amicitia broke off unexpectedly. The mast was severely weakened by wood rot. Three people died in the accident. To ensure the safety of passengers onboard historic vessels, the branch need to take responsibility to raise professional standards. The commercial growth in the last decade surpassed the available knowhow about safe maintenance of these special vessels. Furthermore the certification and supervision on these vessels is insufficient. Private approval bodies do not certify according statutory terms and governmental supervision from the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate is absent.
The final report ‘Breakage of mast Harlingen’ and the animation are also published in the German language.
Die Untersuchung ‘Mastbruch Harlingen’ und die animation werden auch in deutscher Sprache erschienen.
