The Council of Ministers of the Kingdom of the Netherlands has approved the nomination of Dr Erica Bakkum as a permanent member of the Dutch Safety Board. Her appointment will take effect on 1 December 2021 for a period of four years.

Previously, Dr Bakkum worked as a gynaecologist at the OLVG hospital in Amsterdam and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Leeuwarden Medical Centre. She is currently a member of the Supervisory Board of Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, among other positions. This appointment means the vacancy has been filled that was created by the departure of Prof. Marjolein van Asselt. The new board member was chosen in an open recruitment and selection procedure.

Dr Erica Bakkum on her appointment: “Safety is vital for everyone. For me, safety is an essential component of strategy and processes and activities in the healthcare sector, which is why it is so important to learn lessons when things go wrong unexpectedly. I am looking forward to contributing to safety in the Netherlands in the broader context of the Dutch Safety Board.”
