The Board started its investigation in April 2021, to investigate the way in which citizens in the Netherlands are protected against the risks of harmful industrial emissions and discharges, sometimes over a period of many years. Part of the investigation is to learn in which ways the health effects on local residents has been taken into account when allowing and controlling long-term industrial emissions. The impact of Tata Steel in the area of IJmuiden proved the concrete start of the investigation. The Board at the same time announced that other industrial complexes in the Netherlands that are subject to similar problems might be added to the investigation. With the complexes in Nijmegen and Dordrecht, the investigation has now expanded.
