In case of an incident that raises the interest of the Dutch Safety Board, such as a train collision, the collapse of a building, a plane crash, its investigators can travel to the site immediately for an exploratory investigation. They will examine the scene, collect information, talk to those involved and to witnesses, and - if safe and feasible - start a preliminary technical investigation.
If emergency assistance is still being provided, this process naturally takes precedence. The investigators also coordinate their activities with the other parties involved at the site of the incident.
Based on the initial findings, the Safety Board decides whether to open a full investigation.
