Investigation into fipronil in the food chain

The Dutch Safety Board has opened an investigation following the discovery of the pesticide fipronil in the food chain. The Board intends to find out why the substance was not detected earlier and which role the poultry industry and government played in this matter. As such, the main focus is not on the health hazards of fipronil, but rather on the functioning of the food safety system. . The ways in which consumers were informed about the risks of fipronil is another issue that the Board will consider.

The purpose of investigations by the Board is to improve safety, not to apportion blame or liability. The Dutch Safety Board will now appoint an investigative team. Usually, the Board publishes its final report within a year.
