Landing overrun, Boeing 747, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Status : Closed

ELY 812 was a cargo flight on a Boeing 747-245F aircraft from Los Angeles via New York and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Tel Aviv. On 8 February 1999, ELY 812 departed John F. Kennedy Airport for an uneventful flight to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The weather forecast for the expected time of arrival had informed the crew of a passing cold front with westerly to north-westerly winds, CB clouds, rain and snow. During the approach the landing runway was changed from 01R to 01L. The first officer executed a standard autopilot coupled ILS approach followed by an automatic landing on runway 01L. The second part of the runway was covered with snow and the flight crew was unable to stop the aircraft before the end of the runway. The aircraft slid over the end of the runway at a very low speed.
