In 2012, the Netherlands was shaken up by a rise in the number of serious incidents and accidents in the general aviation sector (17 serious incidents and 22 accidents compared to a previous annual average of 10 serious incidents and 11 accidents). The rise in the number of reported accidents involving light aircraft has alarmed the Dutch Safety Board as it seems to point to a possible threat to the safety of air passengers.
