Water

When the Dutch Safety Board was set up, one of the sections assigned to it was that of Nature and Environment. Although nature and the environment are issues of great social significance, there are very few incidents in the Netherlands that cause safety-related problems. Fortunately, natural disasters are rare events in our country. A much more common scenario is one where nature and the environment are themselves at risk due to incidents caused by activities that come under other sectors. One exception to this is the water and water management sector, where hazardous situations can occur in the Netherlands that put people at risk. This is why it has been decided that developments in the field of water control should be monitored at all times. Another point is that in exceptional cases an investigation will be carried out into a natural disaster if it is felt that it could help us to learn, in which case the necessary expertise will be brought in at the appropriate time.
